The Port Au Port Indian Band was established in 1979 under the leadership of Neil Lucas. It was one of the original Bands that surround Bay St. George. All the Band in the area joined forces and affiliated with the Federation of Newfoundland Indians. The current membership consists of 373 adults and 86 dependants (under 19) An associate list is kept for those who live outside the Island. The band became Incorporated on November 20, 2003. The Band operates its day to day business out of the residents of the chief. Members of the Band have a variety of surnames with the most prominent being Benoit, Gaudon, White. Other surnames include Alexander, Brake, Hynes and Marche but the majority of members trace their Ancestry to the Benoits and the Gabriels.
